I have been given a United States Telecommunications Training Institute (USTTI) fellowship grant by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) last July 2006. The grant enabled me to attend the course on 3G wireless technologies at the QUALCOMM™ University in San Diego, California.

QUALCOMM is the patent holder for the cellular phone technology, and holds hundreds of patents in its IP portfolio. Photo at left shows me at the lobby of the QUALCOMM corporate headquarters. For more information about QUALCOMM, visit their website.

Manny Diaz in front of the Embassy Suites in La Jolla, San Diego, CA While in San Diego, I stayed at the Embassy Suites in La Jolla, which is part of the Hilton Group. There were many Filipinos in their crew, and during breakfast, compatriots from the kitchen prepare special meals for me and my buddy and fellow grantee from the National Telecommunications Commission, Rolando San Luis. A few steps from the hotel was a Chinese restaurant, P. F. Chang's China Bistro, that served unlimited rice. Across the street was the University Town Center, a shopping complex that also doubled as our strolling destination after long days at QUALCOMM learning 3G wireless technologies.

San Diego was interesting. We were able to see the posh La Jolla beach and the Shops at Las Americas right beside the United States border with Mexico. My stay there was capped by a party at the House of Blues, somewhere downtown.

After San Diego, I had to fly back to Washington, DC, for the other training modules at IBM, AT&T, and Packet Clearinghouse. [Previous][Next]
