In Washington DC, I stayed at the Club Quarters Hotel which is located at the corner of I and 17th streets, NW. It is just two blocks away from the Whitehouse, and is nextdoor to the subway station (although it closes on weekends).
Together with participants mostly from African and South American countries, I took a course on Internet Governance: Issues and Challenges at the AT&T; I took another course on Broadband Technology Economics and Regulation with the Packet Clearinghouse; and a final course on Innovation That Matters: e-Government for Developing Nations at the IBM Institute for Electronic Government. One sponsor cancelled, so we had the rest of the week to explore DC.
I loved DC. Life there was quiet, although a little expensive. On weekends, 'locals' are nowhere to be found. Shops downtown are closed. But you could usually see tourists around, especially near where I stayed, because it is near the White House. I had the chance to see the Smithsonian museums at the national mall, and the famous landmarks such as the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, the War memorials, including the National Cemetery at Arlington, VA, just across the Potomac River.
